The Carnivorous Plant FAQ Field Trip Report -

Western Australia in 2007

Return to the Trip Overview

Finally!
Our first day out started spectacularly. Phill drove us down a sandy road northwest of Harvey, and stopped the car near a big patch of trees. He turned off the car and I threw myself out of the passenger seat. I looked at the ground at my feet and was overjoyed to see a carpet of red--that color so characteristic of Drosera.

I looked closer... oh wait, never mind, it was just some kind of tiny noncarnivorous plant carpeting the ground--false alarm!

So instead we walked into the trees. Once again, we were attracted to this bit of red--Drosera menziesii subsp. menziesii! BANG, our first Western Australian carnivorous plant!

Here is another composition of this plant viewed from the side, showing that this scrambling sundew was lying on its side.
