The Carnivorous Plant FAQ Field Trip Report -

A Shadow over North Carolina

Return to the Trip Overview

Spider:
These plants were very pretty! Although I do not document it well in this photograph, the plants were Sarracenia flava var. ornata. Man, some were really beautiful because the pitcher venation was essentially black. It was really astonishing. I had seen this color pattern only once before, in some cultivated plants. (See for example these photographs of cultivated specimens grown at a university collection: image 1, image 1)

The green lynx spider (Peucetia viridans) seen here is hanging onto a big dead wasp. It was very pretty, but it was even more shy. Whenever it saw me move, it dropped into the pitcher to hide. Only by moving very slowly was I able to stalk it. It took about 30 minutes before I got close enough for a photograph I wanted to take.
