Notice that the plants are in
discrete clumps. The hillside is gently sloping (you are facing uphill).
Those are quartz rocks exposed in the soil in the foreground.
Man, it took a lot of work to get those flags hidden for this
photograph. And yes, I uncovered them all when I was finished.
(So don't worry, I didn't muck up someone's research project.)
