The Carnivorous Plant FAQ Field Trip Report -

Dodging Montana bears in 2006

Return to the Trip Overview

Colorful:
The plants were small but very red; the coloration and the well-developed hibernacula indicated the plants were preparing for winter. Unfortunately, the Sphagnum mat was so small, and there was already so much damage from prior visitation, that we kept our visit short to avoid contributing to the site's degradation. After a few photographs, we left the mat and surveyed elsewhere for more plants, but we didn't find anything--not even Utricularia in the water.

With nothing to retain us, and the fear of darkness upon us, we hustled back to our car. It was our last day in the western part of Glacier, and I regretted not having one extra day. Peter Lesica had told me about a nearby research site with Utricularia intermedia, but we did not have time to visit it.
